I loved writing so many of the characters that crop up in Sign of the Wolf. To me they are very human and have a variety of challenges they all must face.
Helm – The Lost Soul
Helm is somewhere between the ages of 19 and 22 at the beginning of this story (I always forget exactly how old he is). At about age 10 he was found in the Grene Wode by a couple of unsavory men who sold him as a slave to none other than that treacherous little leprechaun the Trader who promptly turned around and sold him to Bledri’s navy. For About two years Helm served aboard the Miasma, the flag ship of Bledri’s naval fleet, before he was rescued by the crew of the Idumea, a pirate ship. With no other choice than walking the plank or joining the crew the young man became a pirate and served under Captain Rogers for seven years before his indenture was up. Now free to return to Alysphidel, the first land he can remember, Helm will try to piece together a past that he is starting to believe might not even be real.
Fein – The Rebel
Fein has been a part of the resistance against the tyrannical reign of a power hungry werewolf all his life, the only problem is that Fein too is were-kin as is his father and brother. Caught between wanting to do the right thing, and feeling that all anyone will ever see in him is his silver wolf eyes, Fein struggles to earn the respect he thinks he deserves. When his mother fails to return from a mission Fein abandons everything to go and find her, and finds, much to his chagrin that the snarky pirate who came on board after a disastrous recruiting mission insists on coming with him. Sure Fein owes the guy his life, but he does not trust the pirate, or is it just that Fein is jealous of him?
Asa – The Assassin
For so many years Asa has felt nothing, but when she is assigned to take out a young sailor something changes. Can it be that the pirate holds the key to her freedom not only from the thrall of her master, but also from her own emptiness? Is it even possible to dare to hope that he might have the object that Asa has been searching for for so many years? Can she resist the pull of her thralldom to kill the young man long enough to find out?
